Are my device repairs covered by my warranty?
The typical duration for a phone warranty is most commonly one year, or 12 months, from the date of purchase. This is the standard warranty length for most major phone manufacturers including Apple and Motorola. However, some manufacturers offer longer coverage periods of two years, or 24 months. Brands such as Samsung, Nokia, Sony, Huawei, LG, and HTC typically provide this extended two-year warranty. In Malaysia specifically, the standard warranty duration by manufacturers is 12 months.
What kind of defects affecting which parts is no covered by manufacturer warranty
A manufacturer phone warranty does not cover user-caused defects, accidental damage, or normal wear and tear affecting key parts of your device. Accidental damage is the biggest exclusion, including cracked or shattered screens from dropping the phone, broken camera lenses, and damage to the device frame or body from impacts. Liquid damage is almost never covered, even if your phone has an IP water resistance rating, including damage from spilled drinks, food spillage, or exposure to moisture.
Cosmetic issues and wear are also not covered, such as scratches on the screen or outer surface, dents, deep gouges on the screen or case, and normal wear and tear from everyday use. This includes battery degradation over time, corrosion, rusting, or stains. Charging port damage like bent, broken, or loose charger ports, or corroded or discolored charging connectors from regular use falls outside warranty protection.
Software and modification issues are excluded, including problems from unauthorized software, jailbreaking, root access, third-party apps, or modifications not approved by the manufacturer. Any damage resulting from unauthorized repairs or having the device repaired by someone other than a manufacturer-authorized technician will void the warranty completely. Additionally, damage from misuse, abuse, alteration, or tampering, failure to follow normal operating procedures, wrong electrical supply or voltage, and acts of nature like fire, flood, or animal infestations are not covered.
